Public Hearing Notice:

The Mount Washington Conservation Commission in accordance with MGL 131 S40 will hold a Public Hearing to review a Notice of Intent for Ecological Restoration Project (NOI) filed by the Town of Mount Washington regarding townwide Habitat Management Plan.  Massachusetts DCR, The Nature Conservancy and Berkshire Natural Resource Council are joint applicants.

Meeting will be held at Town Hall, 4/25/24 at 7pm at Town Hall, 2 Plantain Pond Rd, Mount Washington, MA.  All interested parties are called to be present.  Scott Miller, Chair

Botanical Site Survey and Mapping
Tuesday, April 2, 2024
9am – 3pm
Meet at Town Hall

BSC Group Senior Botanist, Tom Groves, will lead a site survey of town roads and properties to inventory plant species and invasive populations.  This is an opportunity to join Tom on his survey and learn how to identify invasives species and use the Stewardship Project Crowdsource Mapping Tool.

This will be a carpool event that will travel all the town roads.  Arrange to carpool.  Dress for the weather. Pack a lunch.  Bring your camera/smart phone. Be prepared to do some walking. Join for as much time as you want.

Cars leave town hall promptly at 9am.


MEET TOM:

Tom has been providing ecological restoration advice to national wildlife refuges, state biologists, NRCS, and private landowners in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont for the past decade. From 2015 – 2023, Tom was responsible for planning, managing, and executing 1,400 acres of habitat restoration work annually on behalf of a Vermont-based forestry company. In the past year as a Senior Botanist with BSC Group, Tom has been leading rare plant surveys, ecological restoration mitigation strategies, and permitting of ecological projects with clients like National Grid, Eversource, and Bradley International Airport. Additionally, Tom was a BSC Team member working with the City of Stamford, CT to map and prepare invasive management strategies to assist the city in meeting ecological restoration goals. Tom is a botanist who is forever intrigued by the world around him, excited by natural habitats, and observant of all the special components of the biodiversity in New England.

Report on Recent Botanical and Road Surveys in the Town of Mt. Washington
April 11, 2024, 7pm – 8pm

BSC Group Senior Botanist, Tom Groves, will provide a primer on the unique botanical ecology found in the Town of Mt. Washington and then report on his botanical survey of town roads and properties.  This is an opportunity to learn about the unique biodiversity found in our town and how it is threatened by erosion, disturbance, and invasive species.

The presentation will then pivot to a discussion led by BSC Landscape Architect and Senior Associate, Casey Lee Bastien about vulnerable town roads.  The presentation will identify priorities for town road infrastructure improvements and how using environmentally sensitive engineering and nature-based solutions can effectively manage storm water runoff and reduce invasive species proliferation.
